The Oracle of Place is a living project rooted here in Kington, designed to celebrate and renew the connection between people, land, and story. At its heart, this is about weaving together the wisdom, memories, and traditions that make our community unique, honouring the past while creating something entirely new for the future.
The central aim is to co-create a one-of-a-kind deck of cards - an “oracle” - inspired by Kington’s local stories, landscapes, folklore, and seasonal rhythms. Each card will be shaped by the voices, creativity, and lived experiences of people who call this place home. Together, we’ll collect memories, listen to the land, and find new ways to express the spirit of Kington in symbols, words, and art.
Unlike many wellbeing, folklore, or arts projects, the Oracle of Place is not something created behind closed doors and delivered to the community, it grows from within the community itself. This approach values local knowledge and creativity, treating everyone as a potential co-creator, not just a participant or audience. The oracle won't only be a beautiful object; it will be a process of listening, sharing, and shaping meaning together.
The vision is to build a resource that belongs to Kington, created by and for the people here, while also offering inspiration to anyone curious about new ways of connecting to place. Through workshops, conversations, walks, and creative sessions, we’ll invite neighbours, friends, and newcomers alike to join in however they choose.
Whether you want to contribute a story, help shape a card, join an event, or simply follow the journey as it unfolds, you're warmly welcome.
The Oracle of Place is an invitation to reconnect with the land beneath your feet, the community around you, and the stories that help us all belong.
